Hi Jeremy,
I installed the latest explorer, but its output shows all the same Serial numbers. Any clues?

Hi Alf,
Thanks for the information. But on my thumper box, iostat is not
showing Serial No:

[root@thumper /]$ iostat -E sd45
sd45      Soft Errors: 37 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: ATA      Product: HITACHI HDS7250S Revision: A20A Serial No:
Size: 500.11GB <500107862016 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 37 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

It is showing the device ID though:

[root@thumper /]$ iostat -Ei sd45
sd45      Soft Errors: 37 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: ATA      Product: HITACHI HDS7250S Revision: A20A Device Id:
id1,sd@SATA_____HITACHI_HDS7250S______KRVN03ZAG2JHUD
Size: 500.11GB <500107862016 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 37 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

How can I be sure that same disk is being used when thumper is booted
in Linux.? On Linux "hdparm -I" will show the serial no.

Regards,
_Atul

Have you tried "format -e"? Third line on the inquiry on my scsi device
returned the serial number. I'm not sure that ATA works that same way,
but you might want to check. Let me know.

commands to run:

format -e (select the drive)
scsi
inquiry

example:

format> scsi

Warning: these functions are intended for expert use only, for
debugging disk devices and for unusual configuration settings.
It is recommended that you do not use this menu for normal disk
configuration and formatting, unless you have explicit instructions,
or know exactly what you are doing.

SCSI MENU:
p<n> - display a mode sense page
p<n> b<n> <op> [~]<n> - change a byte and issue mode select
b<n> <op> [~]<n> - add an operation to the mode select list
for the current page

where: p<n> specifies the page with page code <n>
b<n> specifies byte <n> of the page
<op> can be one of the following operators:
= (set specified value)
|= (bitwise OR with current value)
&= (bitwise AND with current value)
<n> can be a decimal value in the range 0-255,
or two hexadecimal digits, in the form 0x<xx>.
[~] complements the specified value

apply - apply mode select list
cancel - cancel mode select list
display - display mode select list
all - display all supported mode sense pages
default p<n> - mode select page <n> to default values
default all - mode select all pages to default values
format - format without standard mode selects
inquiry - display device's inquiry response
list - list common SCSI-2 mode pages
!<cmd> - execute <cmd> , then return
quit

scsi> inquiry
