Hi,
This project initially just started as a learning experience to understand how x86 boot and miniroot work. But later it progressed to a stage where we found that a complete distro is possible.
The initial aim was to get a GNU/Solaris distro and Solaris compatibility option was later decided to be kept as well.
Another aim is to popularise OpenSolaris among the local OSS community where it is almost a non-entity as yet. The best way to do this as of now is to develop a distro locally - folks will hopefully be more interested on stuff coming out of their backyard, and done by people who they regularly interact with (I regularly attend the local OSS meets). Makes an impact.
Also IMHO it is beneficial to OpenSolaris to have >1 distro based off it. It gives choice to people. Look at the Linux distros. Each person uses his own favourite distro and this helps popularise it.
Lastly I had wanted to do such a thing long back with Linux. But coming out with yet another Linux distro did not seem to be a great idea. OpenSolaris is however a different ball game.

Surprising!

SchilliX is a great distro with lots of amazing work going into it. BeleniX has just seen the light of the day and is still quite alpha stuff. But I did compile most of the OSS packages included in BeleniX in BeleniX itself. And now I have also been able to successfully compile and run Xorg CVS tree on BeleniX - both using Sun Studio 10 and GCC 3.4 compilers.
Regards, Moinak.

The first-ever Debian-based GNU/Solaris distribution is coming out soon! ==============================================================
I've attached a screenshot taken few days ago off our T30 Thinkpad. This is OpenSolaris build 22 kernel with the newest GNU userland on top.
This picture shows a few things... There is Evolution client, terminal (with uname and a list of running processes), GNU/Solaris software update manager with ready-to-use upgrades. There's also Firefox, Synaptic package manager, MySQL, and Gaim Instant Messenger.
In addition, there are about 2,000 (yes, Two Thousand) more packages that did not fit on screen ;) - but that nevertheless are available for immediate usage.
This new operating system runs today our www.gnusolaris.org two-way Opteron server that we have used, and will continue using, for its own development.
The goal is to provide a complete open source distribution. The bar is set high - considering the existing free Linux distributions, and the usability/quality that people do expect by default.
It'll take us a 3-4 more weeks to get ready.
Our gnusolaris.org website is under construction; in 3-4 weeks we'll provide not only downloads (ISO and all packages), but a fully functional *development portal*, with package searching/browsing capabilities, with integrated source control and bug reporting facilities. The goal is to immediately enable people to (1) download, install, and run the distribution, and (2) contribute.

That's excellent news Alex! You seem to have come a long way.
Which repositories are you using for synaptic? Do you have your own or are you going to integrate with Debian's?
Please send out a notice when you launch (You may want to consider posting to the gnu-opensolaris list as well).

This is a separate repository/development/website. Like most of Debian "children-distros".

Will do. Working on it.

It's under construction. Can download, search over 2000 packages by: package name, file name, substring. Can view file lists, changelog. Today added discussion forums. Still need to integrate with bug tracking, etc.Should be done with that and a few outstanding issues by early November.
>> Which installer are you using ?
Just a custom minimal script, The installer's going to be a separate project.
Also:
Added a few office applications: abiword, dia, stardict, gnumeric, mergeant (MySQL frontend). Here's a screenshot (see attached).

It looks like the site is up but it's currently password protected. Is there a process for getting an account or is this something which will go away once the site development is further along?
