Hi everyone,

We're pulling together a media kit and training DVD for students. Here
are some of the things we'd like to include. Anything you would add or
remove?

- Solaris Express Community Release
- OpenSolaris source code
- Studio compiler and other tools
- gcc compiler

- Video of a Solaris installation
- What to expect from OpenSolaris vs Linux vs FreeBSD etc.
- Documentation on how to install and boot Solaris
- Pointers to key info on opensolaris.org

What do you think? Are we on the right track?

Teresa,

That's a great idea. Can you fit all of that onto a single DVD :)

How about StarOffice 8?

Do key info include pointers to external audio, ethernet drivers and
blastwave.org?

Thanks Tony. We haven't fleshed out the "Key info" section, so send
your ideas in. We expect this to evolve a bit over time. We're working
on the schedule and such in the next couple weeks and will keep you all
posted along the way.

Hi all,

It's really a good idea and it's proved helpful from my experience of making the first version of the OpenSolaris DVD.

Please refer to my blog about the details (http://blogs.sun.com/joeyguo)
The First Version OpenSolaris DVD Rolled Out The first version OpenSolaris DVD will distribute at the OpenSolaris Beijing User Group meeting and 2005 China National OS Teachers' Conference on Oct. 15. The DVD include the following contents.

Tools:
All tools are classified into SPARC and x86 versions. Please go the subdirectories (./sparc and ./x86) to get the corresponding version of following tools:

We're pulling together a media kit and training DVD for students.  Here
are some of the things we'd like to include.  Anything you would add or
remove?

- Solaris Express Community Release
- OpenSolaris source code
- Studio compiler and other tools
- gcc compiler

- Video of a Solaris installation
I have a document with the pictures step-by-step.
- What to expect from OpenSolaris vs Linux vs FreeBSD etc.
I have a collection of the pointers and documents.
- Documentation on how to install and boot Solaris
- Pointers to key info on opensolaris.org

What do you think?  Are we on the right track?

Teresa,

That's a great idea. Can you fit all of that onto a single DVD :)

Yep, it's possible. I have made the first version of DVD and handed out at the conference and user group.

How about StarOffice 8?

Yep, so far we have only the x86 version.
Do key info include pointers to external audio, ethernet drivers and blastwave.org?

As for the drivers, it seems to me most of them are included in the Solaris Express DVD.

We could include some pointers to the Download center and Blastwave, but we couldn't include everything in the DVD.

Please tell me the expected date you want to release them. I could roll-up them and send to you for your reference.

HIH.

Thanks & Best regards,

While we do have most drivers, audio driver and network drivers such as
the oss and bcf are still only available outside (and I'm not sure if
they're available on Blastwave. And don't forget the new wifi drivers
and friends :^) Pointers would be a good solution.

The Wifi drivers and wificonfig utilities are better to bunch with the DVD. Besides, of what you are requesting, oss is developed by 4-Front Technologies via their OSS Driver for Solaris x86 and bcf is wired NIC device driver developed by Sun engineer.

So my suggestion is better we have a list of the frequently used device driver outsides the Install DVD so that we could collect the packages inside Sun or the pointers outside Sun.

Pointers would be a good solution.
Yep, I agree.

Thanks,

Something also useful would be some hints and howtos e.g. getting the
most out of DTrace, installing on common platforms, running on
virtual machines like VMware and VirtualPC, ... I am planning on
exploring some of this ground over December-February (our summer).

Philip,

Great ideas...and your earlier ones too. I especially like the idea of
pulling it together so others can pull it down and create their own DVD
is needed.

Joey,

Thanks for the details on what is one your DVD. Would love to connect
one what you did and how you did it....I bet you can speed us along!

I don't think there's all that much you need to know in terms of installing
either on the metal or in a VM. In terms of DTrace material, I suggest
you take a look at the information on the DTrace community web site and on
various blogs:

http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/bmc?entry=demo_ing_dtrace
http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/ahl/?anchor=dtrace_boot_camp
http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/ahl?entry=dtrace_presentation_at_javaone

And many others.

How about also pointing to a web site with further resources,
including course materials? The DVD will be good for big stuff like
the OS and OS source, but a web site will be easier to keep up to
date with new material.

Would there be any problem with copying the DVD locally, or putting
it on a server for our students to pick up?

Hi Ankur,

We don't have one produced yet; when we do we will be announcing here

Did you check out Joey Guo's post yet? It may contain things of
interest for you.

regards

Patrick
