10 most important things about OpenSolaris

( Cross posting to opensolaris marketing alias )
We're growing so fast, and so many people are now joining in--and I was
wondering...what are the 5 most important things we'd say about
OpenSolaris?
List your favorites! Make it witty and wise.
What's the "cocktail" pitch (meaning, how would you describe what you do
in the opensolaris.org community in the time it takes for the bartender
to mix your drink?)
:)

Thats a tough one... witty and wise in 5 things during the time it takes to mix a drink? (Which is hard because I refuse to drink mixed drinks... too wimpy.)
Here's a stab:
1) OpenSolaris & Solaris10 is bringing innovation to the UNIX world that we should have had 20 years ago. 2) F**k UNI****ke... Run the real thing. 3) If Sun had open sourced SunOS/Solaris in 1990 Linux wouldn't exist. 4) GPL gives you freedom at knife-point... your free so long as you force everyone else to be free. CDDL provides a better way. 5) Open Source != "Linux". Thanks to standards, most of which Sun was involved in, 95% of the open source applications avalible run on OpenSolaris... the other 5% are non-portable **** that deserves to die.
Hows that? The "while my Guinness is pouring" explanation would be "If you wanna suck, thats your problem... when you are interested in the future, let me know."

Most Linux people turn off at this point. If the booze is free then you have a chance but from what I have seen the Linux types roll their eyes and say "sure what-ever".
> 2) F**k UNIX-like... Run the real thing.
The booze had better be free at this point.
> 3) If Sun had open sourced SunOS/Solaris in 1990 Linux wouldn't exist.
By this point you stand alone muttering to a plant in the corner.
How about this :
(1) its free. like as in while I pour you this drink you can go download real Solaris and install it if you want and it has the power of a freight train. Oh and you can get the source code also.
I know that I use this "freight train" thing way too often but its bloody true.
(2) you can build the latest rev yourself by following some simple steps.
(3) it runs like a gazelle that just spotted a lion. Really, no way, it rocks for power. More important is that you can grab some old box and install it.
see : http://www.blastwave.org/dclarke/stuff/sol10/book.html its a work in progress
(4) Sun isn't Sun anymore. They're Sun now. You don't need a million bucks to get someone to listen to you. They have rockin' fast hardware for like half the price of clunkers from Dell.
Yes that is on x86. 64-bit AMD Opteron actually.
And Sun still has a really big lab and smart guys that do real research and they create these really cool chips and SunRay things that allow you to put a computer where there isn't any and it doesn't need a hard drive or anything.
(5) There is a large community of people that will be there to help you and get you started. You can join up at OpenSolaris.org and drop in on old and well established mail lists and be a complete fall on your face newbie. No one will hack on you ( not much ) and you can just do what you want to get up and running.
but this is targetted at someone that is fairly open minded anyways. I have recently tried to explain to a telco company that they really don't need to install Windows 2003 and Exchange to get basic email services.
morons ...
Maybe we need to really get the word out without being subtle :

Agreed on all of the above, and to make it up to the 10, maybe:
6) You can start your own OpenSolaris User Group! Put up posters! Send out flyers! Just think Blues Brothers; but maybe avoid the use of child labour ;-) You don't need any qualifications to do so; and you may find that there are many folks in your area who are keen to show up. Our friendly Community Manager Jim Grisanzio will welcome you with open (sic) arms...
7) We have a Community Advisory Board made up of guys inside and outside of Sun, who are all pulling together to make sure that OpenSolaris does not go off the rails, or get hijacked.
8) We got a hot cutting-edge source browser that will find any needle in that code-haystack...
9) Make your mark OpenSolaris! Take on a "bite-sized" existing bug from the bugs database, or raise an RFE for a new feature, and working with a sponsor in Sun, get your own code into OpenSolaris!
10) Make your own OpenSolaris-based distro! The ultimate ego-trip! See your name in lights on a LiveCD! There are guys out there in the OpenSolaris Community who have done this stuff, and will be only too happy to help you out!
I know that it was supposed to be 5 (or 10 from the subject line of LKR's original mail), but the "while my Guinness is settling" analogy is spot on.

Agreed completely. And I thought that you had an OpenSolaris logo on a previous incarnation of the Blastwave homepage...

Sounds nice but does not yet work even for things that did start 3 years gao.
Let us wait until the first real code from outside Sun is integrated and
/etc/rmt, star and a (star based) librmt.so using ufsdump/ufsrestore are integrated into OpenSolaris.

Agreed completely on the Blastwave plug. I thought you used to have an OpenSolaris banner on the Blastwave homepage?

Well, you could try something like :
"OpenSolaris : all the stability of BSD, all the features of Linux, more innovation than both put together."
And at some point, I'd like to add, "all the ease of use of the Mac and better 3rd party support than Windows" and I'd be delighted. [ if you're going to piss off one group of OS-users, might as well do it in an even-handed way ] Of course, I can't yet add those extra phrases, but I've every confidence we'll get there soon.
I suspect though, that such an approach would likely alienate a lot of audiences before I've even got going. The best thing I've found, is, depending on who I'm talking to, that sometimes it's best to just casually let people discover I'm running OpenSolaris.
I was at a wedding a few weeks back, uploading photos to my laptop in the hotel reception the morning after, via USB card-reader - when someone asked "That's not Linux is it ?" I said no, and promptly wandered into a rather gentle, live demo of SMF and DTrace -- they were more than a little impressed, and left planning on downloading Solaris Express as soon as they could (Yes! Mission Accomplished!)
My point is, you don't have to be in people's faces all the time when you're selling OpenSolaris : sometimes it's best to just let the OS do the talking...
That said, having a good story to tell is a useful bit of ammunition to have, as I mentioned a while back over at : http://opensolaris.org/os/community/marketing/help-marketing
cheers, tim
