[osol-discuss] Solaris SXCE 126 on X61 unusable

What happedned....
After the installation:
- the GNOME background is black, not a single icon appears
- the filemanager repeatedly dumps core or eats up one CPU I have a dual core system so the load is 50%
- the KBD and mouse input is not usable: It works for a second then it mounse/kbd input hangs for aprox. 2 seconds.
- Suspend/resume still kills the current login session This is a problem I reported in Spring already.
I have the impression that since about a year, when the transition to the new X server happened, many bugs have been introduced but never fixed.
Note that I did not yet install blastwave packages, for this reason I cannot tell whether xine works again. It did not work on build 117 as many fonts have been missing.
What is the background of these problems? I understand that a transition to a new Xorg may cause problems for 3-4 months but for a year?
How can I get a usable installation again?
I should mention that I had a working suspend/resume aprox. a year ago but upgraded in order to get a better version of the Intel WIFI driver.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.
The transition from Xsun to Xorg on x86 happened 5 years ago. Since then we've made a number of Xorg version upgrades and many bug fixes, as you can see on the changelogs we post:
http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Community+Group+x_win/changelogs
I'm sorry if you have bugs that haven't been fixed, but our engineers work off bug reports submitted through bugs.opensolaris.org with enough detail to reproduce, not e-mails to opensolaris-discuss.
(For instance, "X61" is a bit unclear - are you referring to a Thinkpad laptop model or some other device?)

In case you don't know, let me help you: I am talking to the _new_ Xorg version.

Well, I did mention that I am talking about a Lenovo X61 several times before. Did you miss this information?

Try harder - which new Xorg version?
snv_107 - Xorg 1.5.3 snv_116 - Xorg 1.6.1 snv_120 - Xorg 1.6.2 snv_121 - Xorg 1.6.3 snv_126 - Xorg 1.6.5
Would you accept it if a user said "Ever since upgrading star it's broken" and didn't give any more information than that about which version? But since you're convinced we never fix bugs and would rather be obtuse and insulting than reporting a bug, I'm not sure why I'm even asking.

Sorry, but it wasn't in the e-mail you sent, and I do not memorize the contents of every mail sent to opensolaris-discuss. While you may remember everything you send in e-mail, you can expect that no one else does.

I am running OpenSolaris in Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.06) now Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) under VBox (fully updated, now to 3.0.10). Here's a brief summary of the problems:
1. no problem with os08011 liveCD and subsequent installation,
2. image-updated to snv_121 thru snv_125, failed to boot, not even happy face (also failed to boot from the iso image in a separate VBox vdi),
3. image-updated to snv_126, finally saw the happy face, but only booted into text mode.
Those problems were observed with previous versions of VBox.
Any suggestions that I may try? Thanks.
(p.s., I have no problem with Solaris 10u7 running under VBox--actually am very happy with it.)

Did you reinstall the guest additions from the 3.0.10 Virtual Box guest additions iso? Changes in both the OS & VirtualBox require the guest additions to be updated from previous versions.

Thanks Alan.
I always installed GA after the first boot, but in these cases, since I was unable to boot, no GA was installed.
What kind of things would you try if you couldn't boot OpenSolaris into graphic mode on a bare metal?

If I couldn't boot at all? I'd bug the kernel guys.
If it boots, but stops at the text mode login prompt, I'd check for errors in starting gdm or Xorg by running:
svcs -xv (especially the gdm service) less /var/log/gdm/:0.log less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I am finally able to boot from and then install the snv_127 iso image (downloaded from genunix.org) in VBox 3.0.10. It turns out, I strongly suspect, the problem is related to a bug in the Ubuntu package of VirtualBox.
I went back to the snv_126 boot environment, and it also successfully boots into the graphic mode.
Strangely, this bug did not seem to affect (at least the installations of) the os0906 LiveCD, Solaris 10u8, and most Linux distros.
BTW, the sound is also working now (no sound in os0906)--though only barely. But I am glad that at least something is working. :-)

Could be the same issue...
Are you using the DE ISO8859-1 8-bit locale? If yes, as a workaround try to select DE UTF-8 from dtlogin

It may be, the stack dump looks very simular to what I get. I'll try tomorrow and report.
But the problem with the jerking and delayed input even exists if I call kill -STOP for the filemanager to reduce CPU load.
Also the problem with the restarted Xorg after a suspend/resume still exists.

Which video hardware is used in that Lenovo X61? Intel video? IIRC, the latest Xorg intel video driver needs updated kernel bits, which are not yet available for Solaris; there are failing / unsupported ioctls reported in /var/adm/messages ("Bad driver ioctl number").

Intel Video
The fact that the same video hardware works nicely in 3D on Linux since aprox. 2 years makes me wonder why such a laptop that is used by many hackers does not get attention by Solaris. I get the impression that we still have to do a lot in order to make Solaris an accepted community project.

I reported such problems in Spring already. At that time I got the impresssion that nobody was interested in the problem. Thank you Jürgen, for being helpful again!

It seems that the upgrade to the new Xorg version (aprox. a year ago) was done in a way that should never happen. From what you write, it seems that there have been changes that were known in advance to create problems.
I borrowed a test hard disk for the machine and I could e.g. try to go back to build 105 - I believe that this was the last working version with respect to video support.

There are two MAJOR issues I've observed we will need implemented before OS2010.02_snv129 (or OS2010.02_snv128 respin):
1. a 32/64-bit libdrm 2.4.15 fixed implementation (kernel/client update) 2. Intel 2.9.1 device driver update
My test hardware for this incident: Compaq Presario S5000V
I'd start working with Sun on that angle and testing out our hardware with some bug reports and HCL updates to them. Ask Alan C. what is possible before they finalize the freeze of snv_129/130 or OS2010.02.
Stay away from the Intel 2.8.x device drivers. Period.

I don't work on either, but as far as I know, neither of those are planned or possible for 128 or 129, nor are they major bugs, just larger version numbers you want to see.
libdrm & Intel driver updates depend on the new Intel kernel DRI driver happening first, and the kernel driver team has to do a lot of work and pass a long test cycle every time they port the kernel side from Linux to Solaris. They've been working on the DRI update for GEM for a while, and it's slipped delivery dates a few times due to issues they've found (I believe due to differences between Linux & Solaris kernel VM systems).
As has been noted elsewhere, the GEM transition caused a lot of issues with Intel graphics support on Linux when it happened, so they're trying to be careful here.

How to check the versions?
BTW: I have a GM965/GL960 vendoe 0x8086 device isd 0x2a02

Well, I have a problem as I need a workig iwk driver.
As long as I had a working Xorg without kbd/mouse jerks or delays, I had many connection aborts with WIFI. Now I have a usable WIFI but a many problems in Xorg.
It seems that Sun has a different aproach to grant "stabuility" than I have. I would never upgrade component A if it depends on component B that is not yet usable.
