Fantastic work ! Thank you very much. As a fellow KDE lover I look
forward to each release with all its new features and then always
install it on any Solaris machine that I have around me.

I am curious, pardon me for asking a dumb question, but is this the
version that you built entirely with Sun ONE Studio 10 ?

No worries, I almost missed it too :}

Thank you very much!! :-) And a Big Thank You to everyone inside and
outside Sun who has been so helpful, supportive and patient. :-)

And now for the Most Important Question:

who wants to join this effort ? please raise your hand, stand up and
be counted. :-) there's a lot of work to be done, and luckily enough,
we have some time, because KDE4 is not slated to be released before
early Fall of 2006.

there are approximately 5.2 million lines of C++ code in KDE.

i can help, test builds, test install scripts, make sure it runs in

Thank you very much! :-)

we often tend to forget *how important* it is for any software project
to have someone willing to "test drive" the thing and make sure the
thing actually works on a different box than the one it was originally
written and compiled on.

never ending so much sentences with a preposition for. :-P

What type of volunteers are you looking for? Coders? Builders?
Testers? Fans? ;-)

All of the above. :-)

Everyone who is interested has a role. it's a conversation. i will try
my best to write down my thoughts in a coherent manner, and i will
post them here. they are just my thoughts, thinking out loud online,
nothing more. and i promise i will make it short. :-)

Thanks, Stefan. There's certainly interest in a KDE community. Your
"thoughts thinking out loud" are certainly fine. Just scope it all out a
bit for us so everyone knows what you want to do so people can get involved.

Wow.

Thank you very much!! I don't really know what to say, and i think
repeating Thank You gets a little redundant after a while.

I have two ToDo's on my plate for tonight then:

1. Upload all the source code patches at KDE, with instructions.
2. Write my thoughts down about the KDE Community and post them here.

Thank You!!

This will definitely mark one of the major milestones for OpenSolaris.

Now, please excuse me for asking a stupid question.

When you mentioned: <the IA32 binaries are linked against the nVidia hardware accelerated
OpenGL (Solaris nVidia drivers)>

Do you mean that the vVidia driver is part of the kernel? Or must it be loaded as a module?

Thanks again. I think it will take me at least a couple more days for my excitement to calm down a little bit.

The nVidia driver, like all drivers on Solaris, is a loadable kernel
module. What programs link against is the libGL nVidia also provides,
which uses their proprietary interfaces to call into their kernel
modules to get at the 3D acceleration hardware.

Hey,

Thanks for putting up KDE for solaris, I must say that after seeing screenshot, I am tempted to try KDE 3.4.1.

Is there a recommended way to integrated this as a environment option in dtlogin? And how is i18n/l10n in KDE? I wish I could still have localized menu/messages..

Ivan.

the *KDEkdedtlogin<something> package installs the KDE dtlogin
scripts. after installing it, you only have to do a "Reset Login
Screen" and KDE should show up in the Sessions menu.
