Update on OpenSolaris Starter Kit

Hi everyone,
Ages and moons ago, I asked for your help in figuring out what to include in a starter kit for students....to help them get up and running and start contributing to the OpenSolaris community. A few months ago, Maria Lopez shared a requirements document and she received tons of great feedback that got incorporated into the plan. Since then, we haven't been very open about what we've been up to, but we figured it was time to remedy that, so here's a status report of sorts.
* We broke the project up into phases in order to get something out sooner (at least that's the idea!): - Phase 1: Provide a LiveCD with some additional resources - Phase 2: Focus on Installation - Phase 3: Focus on exploring OpenSolaris - Phase 4: Focus on building OpenSolaris and making changes - Phase 5: Focus on contributing your changes back to OpenSolaris
* We're tackling Phases 1 & 2 at the same time. The intention is to get new folks up and running on an OpenSolaris distribution.
* We've changed the focus a bit from just students to anyone installing on an x86 or x64 type computer.
* The kit currently includes a DVD and a CD: the first with distributions, source and tools, the second with training materials. [1]
* Current plan is to include the following training materials: - Why OpenSolaris? - Major benefits of OpenSolaris - Comparison to other operating systems - Features distinctive to Solaris (using the 10 Moves Ahead training) - Getting Started with OpenSolaris - Flash demo for partitioning a drive - Flash demo of Solaris Express Community Release installation - Installation documents for all the distributions - Documents to assist in configuration - A reasonably comprehensive listing of additional online resources
* Current plan is to include the following distributions and such: - Solaris Express Community Release - OpenSolaris source code - Nexenta LiveCD - Belenix LiveCD - Schillix LiveCD - Studio 10 This list keeps changing, and we're not even sure if we have space to include everything. We'll update you with the final list soon.
We'll send the graphics for the case around soon so you can get an idea of the look and feel. In the meantime, feel free to let us know if we've missed the mark. Not sure if we can take corrective action for Phase 1/2, but we should be able to for future phases.
We'd love to have the Starter Kit available for distribution at OSCON at the end of July. That's pushing it a wee bit, but a good goal in any case. Once we have this stuff ready, we'll put the ISO images up on opensolaris.org so anyone can grab them.
Thanks so much, The OpenSolaris Starter Kit Core Team Maria Lopez Patrick Finch Michelle Olson Teresa Giacomini
[1] We could use your help here. The kit is targeted at folks in low bandwidth areas who can't download what they need from opensolaris.org directly. We've heard that DVD drives in those same areas might be few and far between. Is that correct? How important is it for us to have just CD's in this kit, versus a combination?

yes sir, you are absolutely right, See i live in bangalore, and many places around, are typical low bandwidth areas,
Mainly people have typical 56 kbps phone line based connections
and next thing is dvd roms and writers are rare enough, to render dvds useless, But student population and talent is immense
so, having such a guidance pack and including only cd's inside will definitely create a new solaris local revolution
Here people are just waiting for getting things, but there are no means, for local students and unix enthusiasts to get into and get some link
Hope you release this kit as early as possible, I cant wait To dive into OpenSolaris

Hi Chandan,
We working on this kit fast and furious. We hope to have it available by mid-August. We will be posting both CD and DVD ISO images on opensolaris.org as soon as it is ready.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Actually, even with broadband connections, making CD/DVD iso images available is 'bout the only way to get a Linux/Windows user interested in trying out Solaris.
I have seen quite a few people made the transition from Windows to Linux, but I don't recall seeing any Windows user who began the Win-to-Linux transition by downloading the Linux isos. Typically, s/he would get a set of Linux iso images from one of his/her friends, or from a commercial Linux book, without having to first go the tedious downloading/burning process.
I want to give you an example of what an arduous process a Solaris wannabe has to go through before s/he is able to even see the installation boot screen.
It took me a couple of hours to download the 6 zipped Solaris10U2 dvd iso images, do the md5sum, unzip them, and then another md5sum. Since I was afraid to remove the zipped isos before the final checksum, I ran out of the allocated hard disk space during the unzipping process. I was so exhausted at the end that it took me two weeks to squeeze enough adrenalin to cat all the five iso images into a DVD iso and burn it. No one was pre-warned that you should have available about 15 GB of free HD space b/f you began downloading the DVD isos.
I think the OpenSolaris starter kit is a critical first step in spreading the Solaris gospel. Plse let me know if you need someone to test it before final production.

Thanks for you offer of testing. I'll pass the news on to the team, and hopefully we will be able to take you up on it.
Our intent with posting the iso images is not so much that each individual would have to burn their own...although of course that is possible...but that folks we are participating in events around the globe can produce the kit in quantity locally and distribute them at events. It doesn't make sense for us to produce kits here in California for use in Bangalore, or Beijing, or Brazil....
We should have a copy of the training materials available soon for your perusal too.

" . . . but that folks we are participating in events around the globe can produce the kit in quantity locally and distribute them at events . . ."
So (1) there must be an event which is (2) participated by one of Sun's employees, before the disks (i.e., "kit") can be distributed. Am I reading your message right?
If so, I am just curious if any of Sun's employees will be interested in coming to Hawaii?

Hi all,
Step-by-step content for the starter kit, derived from Dave Hagerty and Ginnie Wray's excellent tech talk given at FROSUG last month, is being reviewed here:
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/documentation/reviews/
See the last bullet for information about the review and where to send comments, I'd be grateful for comments by Weds COB. But, all comments will be queued for the next update, so send them on in!
Thanks in advance, Michelle

If your using Windows, you can use "ImgBurn" to quickly burn your iso file to DVD/CD. Its small ( 1-Meg ), convenient, and free. http://www.imgburn.com
