[advocacy-discuss] Advocacy Facilitator Position Open

hey ...
I've been Advocacy Facilitator for many years now. Anyone interested in taking over the roll?
Technically, the OGB is supposed to appoint Facilitators, but if someone is serious about it and wants to jump in I'm sure it would be fine. The initiative would be appreciated, actually, and a fresh perspective would be welcome, too. We'd just have to inform the Facilitation Project about the change, and I'd work with whoever on some transition items. There can be only one Facilitator, but there is plenty of work for many people to do (as there always has been). If no one is interested, I'll just ping ogb-discuss and inform the OGB of my decision and see if they have anyone in mind.
I'm giving up this role because I'm simply out of time. I can no longer work the hours I'm working -- especially given the time zone issues I deal with every day. The core of my job has been shifting to website transition projects for some time now, and that is the direction I will continue moving as I begin focusing 85% of my time there. Also, my community development work, instead of being general in nature and Advocacy-focused, has been shifting toward direct organizing with multiple communities in Tokyo. Both of these moves are by design.
Put simply, I'm focusing directly on where I can be most effective for OpenSolaris so I can move faster in the direction I'm going.

I am getting some responses off list about what is involved in being Advocacy Facilitator. Basically, the Facilitator is a Core Contributor who is the main communications link between the Advocacy Community Group and the OGB. That`s the most important thing, and it`s specified in the Constitution.
So you`d maintain the Advocacy governance records -- Contributor and Core Contributor status, basically, which is taken care of automatically in the database but it needs someone to follow up on who requested what status and if things were voted on properly and sent to the OGB for processing, etc. You`d facilitate governance discussions related to Advocacy, too (elections). You`d update web pages (and there is a lot of that work that needs doing here). Advocacy endorses a few projects and over 120 OSUG projects, so you`d have to be on all those lists so you can properly communicate with everyone. UGs and projects go dormant from time to time, so there is a lot of work to help find new leaders and maintain the leaders grid. Updates to the news page are badly needed, too.
Regarding new projects: I have been setting up UG projects here but the proper place for that is project-setup, so you`ll have to interact with people who are proposing projects and UGs and manage the threads and then when final voting is done send the approved request in the right format to project-setup. I currently staff project-setup for the creation of all projects on the site, and I will continue to do this.
Another issue that comes up from time to time is when Sun sponsors programs to distribute items to the community -- OSUG kits, basically. There is actually a lot of communications work to implement these programs, and the Facilitator can help a great deal (since you will know everyone around the place).
Advocacy is home to about 5,000 people, so it`s potentially a pretty big deal if someone wants to take it and run with it. You have to be serious and see it as an opportunity, though. I`ve certainly taken it as far as I can go given my circumstances and goals and plans, so it`s time for someone new. Now, there is no process for making a transition like this, so if multiple people are interested we`d have to figure out a simple and fair process to manage that so we can choose.
One last thing: when we start migrating to the new site this summer, there will be a lot of issues to consider for Advocacy since it has so any spaces on the site (primarily OSUGs), so you`ll have to like communicating. :) Facilitation = Communication.
That`s all I can think of at the moment. More here:

Jim, et.al. -
I wold love to do this, but I dont meet the base level requirement "the Facilitator is a Core Contributor",
I spent 20 years as a Sun/Solaris Advocate as a pre-sales Engineer in the field, as a post-sales Architect in SunPS, and even a stint in the Answer Center as a favor to an old friend who was co-managing the OS/Install/Boot teams... Much of this work was spent coordinating geographically diverse teams and providing the "Face to the Customer". I have been communicating the vision to all levels of folks in Sun's customer base, from CIO's and CTO's to Development and Data Center Managers to Sys Admins and Software Engineers, for a LONG time.
My first encounter with Sun OS as a customer was in the SunOS 3.2 on M68000 (Sun 2/140) and by the time I joined Sun('89) we were all the way to 3.5 and 68010 based kit. I left Sun in 2008, and am now mostly out of the hardware industry - designing yachts and acting as CIO/CTO for a small Aerospace Specialty Engineering contract house.
thanx,
rich

Hi Jim, Is it mandatory to be a core contributor to work as an advocacy facilitator? If it is not then i am really interested to take the challenge as i already informed you a couple of days ago. In short to say, i am working actively for open source community development since a decade. At present, leading the organization "The OSS Movement" ( www.ossmovement.org) as president that works for the F/OSS adoption to reduce digital divide.
Thanks, Anwarul On Wed, May 20, 2009 at 10:43 PM, Jim Grisanzio <Jim dot Grisanzio at sun dot com> wrote:

Hi ... to Anwarul and Rich: yes, the OpenSolaris Constitution specifies that CG Facilitators be CCs. And I see value in that requirement, too. A large part of the Facilitator's role is governance -- especially around elections -- so that has to be top of mind always. As you can see, there isn't really a big call to do this, however, so I will just keep on keeping on for now. :)
Thanks so much for your interest, guys. Much appreciated.
