BeleniX 0.2 Available

Hi,

Release 0.2 of BeleniX is now available for download from the
following locations:

http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site
http://belenix.sarovar.org/

The primary feature of this release is support for Xorg and booting into
the XFce4
desktop. Also a very simple brain-dead Perl script has been provided
that enables
Zone creation and installation. I have also revamped the website.

The Xserver startup service attempts to augment X -configure using the
ddcxinfo-knoppix
utility ported to OpenSolaris. This queries the Monitor's EDID data if
available to
generate modeline information.

Please visit the website for other details.

Regards,
Moinak.

Cool. Came up perfect with a ATI 9700 graphics card, configed the net with no problems.
Although it's dog slow and not very useful for normal usage which maybe due to debug
turned on. I did notice one thing. uname -a reports BeliniX0.1. Forget to change the rev?

The reason for slowness is that it is booting off CD and the GUI apps
read a large
number of files from the CD, so it takes about 6mins on my 16x drive for
XFce4 to
come up. Also it takes quite a while to start FireFox.

However, I also have /usr/foss and /usr/X11 dumped on the hard disk. So
if I go to
command-line mode mount the /usr/foss, /usr/X11 from hard disk and then
start X, it
takes about 10secs to start the XFce desktop (discounting the bootup
time of course).

So something like cramfs will really help here. Then all of /usr can be
in a compressed file
on the CD. This should allow faster access and allow having more stuff
on the CD.
KnoppiX takes less time to start the KDE desktop and has 2GB of stuff on
a CD by
way of cramfs.

One small thing that can be done is to have a way of keeping the CD
drive spinning so
that subsequent access does not have to wait for for it to spin-up.

Regards,
Moinak.

You are aware that "/usr/foss" should actually be /opt/foss, correct?
Otherwise, your BeleniX distro just broke the SVR4 compliance, at the very least, the consistency is broken.

Please consider moving /usr/foss to /opt/.

Yes we are considering doing this in a subsequent release.

I'm looking, but I'm not finding the .2 link anywhere. I downloaded
what I thought it was but it turned out to be .1

I downloaded:
http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/binfiles/belenix.iso.bz2

If you get XFace desktop, then that is the latest one.
Initial release did not have X.

Here is what I get:
http://belenix.sarovar.org/binfiles/belenix.iso.bz2

Did a 'bzip2 -d' and I get:
$ ls -al bele*
-rw-r--r-- 1 admin all 666288128 Oct 29
14:08 belenix.iso

in which the old belenix 0.1 about 98MB bzipped but
the .2 file was about 220MB bzipped.

The current ISO available is .2 . It is a silly oversight on my part to
not bump the
version number. I will fix that soon.

Moinak.

This URL is broken and redirecting to 127.0.0.1. I'm downloading from
sarovar.org, but that one is going pretty slowly.

Try adding a slash at the end of URL
http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/

It seems to be an Apache misconfiguration on geunix.org
I guess ServerName variable should not be 127.0.0.1 in httpd.conf file.

Ah, the correct address turns out to be:

http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/

(notice the extra / on the end)

Someone really should tell genunix.org that it isn't 127.0.0.1 so
redirections work though.

About BeleniX 0.2

(This is something I was writing up about Belenix, but
feel free to use it...)

Belenix 0.2 shows an incredible approach to what can
be done using OpenSolaris and a little elbow grease.

I sat done and loaded up a copy of Belenix 0.2. Things
were a little slow with the "DEBUG ON" feature
enabled, yet within 10-15 minutes I had XfCE 4.2.0 up
on my screen with Firebox 1.5b2 and SuperTux 0.1.3 to
play around with. Belenix came with Xorg 6.9 (CVS)
which detect and utilized my Nvidia card rather well
through the test without any crashes during my
windowing sessions.

Being a LiveCD, you just have to be used to your apps
being pulled from the drive. Since I used other
LiveCDs, this wasn't as bad as it may seen to
newcomers.

OpenSolaris build 20 comes with Belenix 0.2 which
seems stable through my rigorous testing of loading
various apps at the same time and a period of game
play.

On the short note, the Belenix team has pulled it off
in showing OpenSolaris as a Live CD product.
Hopefully, I like to see OpenOffice come the next
release of the CD...

This goes to show the stability and robustness of
SunOS/OpenSolaris.

As you said BeleniX is elbow grease to make OpenSolaris
usable and demonstrate it's features.

Just so that this is not misinterpreted. I meant "to make
OpenSolaris usable by itself. An attempt to make it self-
hosting."
