Hi All,

Here is a quick update, the event happened as planned and it was fun !

What we came out with : 35 specs for softwares listed at
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/bosug/news (the page also has
the specs that were created)

We were 9 of us, of which 5 were students.
Ananth
Anil (student)
Indraneel (student)
Jayanthi (student)
Komala (student)
Ravishankar (student)
Sanjeev
Saurabh
Shivakumar

Except for Ananth and Myself who had some familiarity with the tool,
everybody else were first timers.

It was fantastic - be it the initial unexpected hiccups with
networking issues, setting up the environment or getting the first
spec file and each one of us earning our lunches !

Thanks to Laca for being online till 3am(his time) ! and also to
tomww(IRC name) for coming online !
To Kira for giving it a good shot at it (again at 3am her time)
To Madhu for the greate job of providing the infrastructure.
To Ananth for sharing the planning efforts. Apart from many things
thanks for managing the online IRC participation on #bosug.

And to all who participated for the wonderful weekend that we had....

best regards
Shiv

PS: The attachment about porting details referred to in the below mail

Subject: Ready to go....

Hi Group,

I hope all of you are set to get started...
Lets meet at 10am tomorrow (same place where tutorial was held).

We'll have some inputs to draw our work upon
1. Belenix sources that were used to build previous Belenix release
2. Some of the sources that we intend to port to OpenSolaris will be
available on the server
3. The spec file repository already has 520+ softwares for which spec
files are written. I have gone through all the patches for the same
and pooled the code corrections done. I am attaching the same for your
reference. This will be available tomorrow.

What you need to do:
1. In case you need VMware images to be put onto your laptop, it helps
to come early so that we can make space on your laptop and provide the
setup VMware environment on your system with the required network
connectivity.
2. If you have any favourity softwares that you want to port, either
get the sources or have the list of softwares so that the sources can
be downloaded during the event.

Kira Morrow (from US) & Ananth.A(from mumbai) had registered to
participate online. We will be using the #bosug IRC channel on
freenode.net for staying online. Incase of Kira, the hackathon starts
at midnight 00:00hrs US time! Kira drop me mail about the time during
which you will be online.
Kira/Ananth, I'll provide a suggested list of softwares that you may
build. The softwares will be chosen such that there are not too many
dependencies on other softwares. I'll send out the list a few hours
before the start of the event.

*** Lets gift ourselves with a fantastic session tomorrow... ***

cheers
Shiv

Hey List,

First of all thanks to Shiv for his drive, organization, incredible
energy and enthusiasm :-) And many thanks to Madhu for taking care of
all the logistics perfectly.

35 spec files in one hackathon session was nice, but I think BOSUG is
capable of *way* more than that. We had a little brainstorming session
after the hackathon and came up with the list of software that each of
us want to personally see working on opensolaris and would therefore be
interested in porting it to SFE. Here is the list:

Eclipse - Saurabh Vyas
Kdevelop - Shiv
MonoDevelop - <up for grabs>
Kompozer - GNS
XULRunner and XUL apps- Sriram Narayanan ?
Python and friends - Ananth Shrinivas
Games and Game-Console Emulators - <mostly up for grabs>
GFtp, xchat, prozilla - Sanjeev Bagewadi
audacity - Anil Gulecha
gnome baker, Graveman, other CD burning Front ends - Ananth Shrinivas
RapidSVN - Anil Gulecha

I've setup a wiki: http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/Software_Wishlist

You can either
1. Add your favorite software to the wiki and hope someone ports it.
2. Or grab one and write a spec file for it.

Cheers,
Ananth

A minor correction, xchat was not for Sanjeev.

xchat & znes(nintendo emulator) will be done by komala,Jayanthi

I'll take up OpenArena as well (the opensource avatar of Q3,
engine+media). I had built it recently.

I'm working on porting the Eclipse platform to Solaris. Suresh Raju
from Sun Bangalore had already done most of the initial work, but some
new things need to be ported. I've focussed on the SWT Browser, and a
compile is in progress right now.

I've made progress with building SWT and Mozilla with Sun Studio, and
am presently looking at correcting some recent patches with add native
support for other binaries within Eclipse.

Once this is ready, we can have spec files for it.

Well done for those who participated.

From what I can see, some of the 35 specs are already in spec-files-extra -
1 - SFEliba52.spec
6 - SFEbdb.spec
8 - SFEcabextract.spec
10 - SFEeasytag.spec
20 - SFElibsndfile.spec

There were false starts (already present in SX or SFE). After removing
some of them these have still remained.
If the version in SFE is an old one compared to the one that has been
created, it will still be useful. Otherwise the ones for which the
versions also match may be ignored.

Awesome! I'm just catching up with all that's been happening on
BOSUG the last few weeks. Congratulations, Shiv, Madhu, Ananth,
et al. From all I hear, the hackathon was extremely well run.

Now that the hackathon is done, what are we planning next? The
spec files will be uploaded to the SFE repository on sourceforce, I guess.
Eric was also maintaining a list of build recipes here:
http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/BuildRecipesReference

Not sure if this is still being maintained. If so, we could
pointers to the new spec files here.

Venky.

Yes. That will happen. the current ones will need some minor cleanup
to align with the conventions of SFE specs. And then it will get in
there.
Probably this weekend.
