Project Proposal: CIFS Server

I would like to propose a new Open Solaris project called
"CIFS Server" providing Microsoft Windows interoperability
capabilities for Open Solaris.

The Common Internet File System (CIFS), also commonly referred to as SMB,
is the standard for Microsoft file sharing services. Unlike NFS, which
is a
pure file sharing service and protocol, CIFS encompasses a wide variety
of services. Such services include file sharing services, naming services,
MSRPC services, and subprotocols such as named pipes, all of which are
required to provide the Windows-like behavior necessary to fully support
CIFS clients.

This project will be initiated by the integration of a preliminary
kernel-based Solaris CIFS implementation into Solaris Nevada B77. The
Solaris
CIFS server includes numerous enhancements to the Solaris OS to accommodate
CIFS file sharing semantics, file attributes, and user credentials.
These changes
make CIFS a "first-class citizen" among other Solaris file system and file
sharing technologies.

This project will be associated with (and endorsed by) the
Storage Community. The proposed leaders will be Joe Wesley,
Alan Wright, and Cathleen Reiher.

Is this based on Samba code or Sun's PC Netlink code base? (I suspect
the later).

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

Neither. Its based on the CIFS codebase currently delivered on Sun's
StorageTek
NAS (non-Solaris) product line(53xx,52xx).

Having a kernel-level CIFS server implementation will be a great
addition to the
OpenSolaris Storage and Data stack. Good news for folks with Microsoft
in their environments.
Nice complement too to the CIFS client work already in OpenSolaris
(http://opensolaris.org/os/project/smbfs/).

Thanks Joe, Alan, Cathleen,
Lynn

Ok, I see that the project page is now in place:

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/cifs-server/

I look forwards to seeing some documentation on
that page, hopefully soon.
A 'getting started' page would be good.
