Hi All, I've updated my compiz easy install bundle and my configuration check script to support the ATI radeon driver developed by Minskey.
So far it's only been tested on Ferrari 4000 laptop.
Details can be found here : http://blogs.sun.com/erwann/entry/ati_support_for_compiz_easy
Cheers,
Erwann

Good work Erwann, Now we just need to wait the new 3D driver of ATI card to be integrated into Solaris.

Erwann,
Thanks this is excellent news! Between ATI and Nvidia chipsets, we must be getting close to majority coverage of the accelerated graphics hardware on modern PCs. Are there accelerated Solaris drivers for 3d acceleration on Intel chipsets yet?
Once they are stable, these drivers should improve performance even on desktop without compiz.

OpenSolaris has had accelerated 3d for Intel devices for quite a while already :) In fact, it's the only open source accelerated 3d device support in OpenSolaris right now (AFAIK)
cheers, steve

Hmm, I thought Nvidia went in a long time ago. I must have been thinking Solaris 10? Did NVidia's weird license prevent drivers from being delivered with Opensolaris? That's good news about ATI and Intel though.

Lau did say *open source* 3d :)

nvidia's closed source 3D drivers were first delivered in Solaris 10 Update 4 and Solaris Nevada build 58. Prior to that they were available as a web download. nvidia's open source drivers only support basic 2D display, without any 3D hardware acceleration, and steve did say "open source accelerated 3d device support".
The closed drivers are not included in Project Indiana, aka "OpenSolaris Developer Preview", because the license did not allow redistribution when that was built. That has since changed, so they may be included in the upcoming Developer Preview 2. (Whether or not they're on the LiveCD or just in the repo is TBD, depending on how full the CD is and resolving the GNOME font size issues.)

We had Intel before ATI, and have far more Intel chipsets covered than ATI ones - the ATI DRI drivers only cover ATI cards that haven't been sold in a few years (R400 and earlier - up to the Radeon X850 approximately in model numbers) - the community is still waiting for AMD to follow the 2D specs release for the current card generations (R500 & R600, aka Radeon X1000-series & HD2000-series) with the promised release of 3D specs.

Hi,
I've been having fun trying to get this working on my Ferrari 3400. Anyone else had any luck?
Firstly, the driver installer needs to be run without Xorg running. And the 3400 can't work in text console mode, so I had to ssh in from an iMac. That worked ok - "svcadm disable gdm"; "install.sh install"; "svcadm enable gdm".
I then install compiz. The wget script to check if it would run said no, because at that stage I'd not edited my xorg.conf, so the radeon driver wasn't in. But the compiz installer does that.
My next problem was that I was using Darren's multi headed xorg.conf, and DRI isn't compatible with multiple heads yet. So I tried out the SingleLayout and the CloneLayout, and neither worked much better. Mind you, the:
Option "AIGLX" "True"
is only added to the currently active layout by the installers, so that needed adding.
My main problem seems to be that neither drm nor radeon are being modloaded by the kernel. I can "modload -p misc/drm" OK, but "modload -p drv/radeon" fails with "can't load module: No such device or address". Which is odd, because it shows in prtconf -v as:
value='pci1002,4e50.1025.57.0' + 'pci1002,4e50.1025.57' + 'pci1025,57' + 'pci1002,4e50.0' + 'pci1002,4e50' + 'pciclass,030000' + 'pciclass,0300'
and:
9 ]grep 4e50 driver* driver_aliases:radeon "pci1002,4e50"
So it should work, no? I've done a "reboot -- -r" and that didn't help. Xorg finds my card and it's supported by *its* radeon driver. Until (from /var/log/Xorg.0.log):
: (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 (M10/M11) NP (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4e50) (--) RADEON(0): Linear framebuffer at 0xd8000000 (II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address) drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address) drmOpenDevice: Open failed [drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon" (EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed to open the DRM [dri] Disabling DRI. :
/dev/dri exists since I modloaded the drm module, but didn't before. And it's empty =O(
Anyone got any further ideas?
Ta, Mark.

Hey Mark:
I got it to work on my 3400. I'm on snv_78. Pretty straight forward. I downloaded the radeon 3D driver from http://opensolaris.org/os/project/dri/files/
I had to copy the /etc/X11/.xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then add Option "BusType" "PCI"
Then I rebooted and installed compiz with the --with-experimental-ati- support option. It feels pretty zappy even with the 1GB mem I have on the system.
Let me know if need more info

Hi Angelo =O)
Thanks for answering. I didn't have an .xorg.conf - that's usually a left over from some other time - could you post me your working file, please?
Could you also send me the output of the following on your working system, please?
o ls -l /dev/dri o modinfo | grep radeon
And you /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be useful, too. Just to see if I can spot the difference. I figure I've over configured myself into a corner here with other changes =O}
Thanks, Mark

Hi again,
I'm using Angelo's xorg.conf, but it's not working still. He's showing:
bash-3.2# ls -l /dev/dri total 2 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 Jan 25 11:50 card0 -> ../../devices/pci@0,0/pc i1106,b188@1/display@0:drm0 bash-3.2# modinfo | grep radeon 83 fffffffff7aac000 250f8 264 1 radeon (radeon DRM driver 1.3)
and I've got:
6 ]ll /devices/pci@0,0/pci1106,b188@1/ total 3 drwxr-xr-x 3 root sys 512 Jan 25 2005 . drwxr-xr-x 17 root sys 512 May 30 2007 .. drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 512 Jan 25 2005 display@0 crw------- 1 root sys 99, 1 Jan 25 22:00 display@0:agpmaster0 crw------- 1 markbo other 99, 0 Jan 25 2005 display@0:text-0 and 3 ]modload -p drv/radeon can't load module: No such device or address
so it's something before X even starts?
Thanks Angelo, but I have something else wrong. I'm running snv_75 and frkit.
Anyone got any suggestions? It's gone 10pm here now, so I'm stopping for the week. And I'll try upgrading the OS if nothing else comes to me...
Ta, Mark.

Hi, Mark,
I just installed a snv_75 from scratch, and add
Option "BusType" "PCI"
to ATI device section of xorg.conf. And then, I installed compzi via Erwann's compiz bundle. It works.
If you cannot set up compiz on F3400, can you send me xorg.conf, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/dt/Xerror if exists.

Hi Minskey and Erwann, thank you both for looking into this.
I'm guessing my OS install is too old, and will upgrade to snv_81 when I'm next in the office (Friday I think).
But in case it helps, a relevant section of my /var/dt/Xerrors file goes:

Hi, Mark,
From the outputs, the drm/radeon are not attached. Can you send me /etc/driver_aliases, and modinfo/prtconf -D outputs.

I got it to work on my 3400. I'm on snv_78. Pretty straight forward.
I downloaded the radeon 3D driver from http://opensolaris.org/os/project/dri/files/
I had to copy the /etc/X11/.xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then add
Option "BusType" "PCI"
Then I rebooted and installed compiz with the --with-experimental-ati-

option. It feels pretty zappy even with the 1GB mem I have on the
system.

Hi,
I've been having fun trying to get this working on my Ferrari 3400.
Anyone else had any luck?
Firstly, the driver installer needs to be run without Xorg running.
And
the 3400 can't work in text console mode, so I had to ssh in from an
iMac. That worked ok - "svcadm disable gdm"; "install.sh install";
"svcadm enable gdm".
I then install compiz. The wget script to check if it would run said
no, because at that stage I'd not edited my xorg.conf, so the radeon
driver wasn't in. But the compiz installer does that.
My next problem was that I was using Darren's multi headed xorg.conf,
and DRI isn't compatible with multiple heads yet. So I tried out the
SingleLayout and the CloneLayout, and neither worked much better.
Mind
you, the:
Option "AIGLX" "True"
is only added to the currently active layout by the installers, so
that
needed adding.
My main problem seems to be that neither drm nor radeon are being
modloaded by the kernel. I can "modload -p misc/drm" OK, but "modload
-p drv/radeon" fails with "can't load module: No such device or
address". Which is odd, because it shows in prtconf -v as:
& nbsp; value='pci1002,4e50.1025.57 .0' +
'pci1002,4e50.1025.57' + 'pci1025,57' + 'pci1002,4e50.0' +
'pci1002,4e50' + 'pciclass,030000' + 'pciclass,0300'
and:
9 ]grep 4e50 driver*
driver_aliases:radeon "pci1002,4e50"
So it should work, no? I've done a "reboot -- -r" and that didn't
help.
Xorg finds my card and it's supported by *its* radeon driver. Until
(from /var/log/Xorg.0.log):
:
(--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 (M10/M11) NP

/dev/dri exists since I modloaded the drm module, but didn't before.

Anyone got any further ideas?

Could you send me your xorg.conf (both before compiz modification and after) ? I'd like to see what I can modify in my scripts to make the install easier.
Thanks,

Hi Mark,
The first problem that I see with your instructions on how you installed is that after running the install.sh script, the first thing you did was "svcadm enable gdm" rather than an full reboot (init 6) - you need the full reboot to ensure that the boot archive is correctly updated.
Darren.

Hi,
Well, re-enabling gdm was required before the reboot, to ensure it came back up with a graphical login - as I said, the 3400 doesn't do text mode very well if the resolution gets played with, and I've been left with a machine with flashing boxes instead of text a few times too many. I have rebooted a few times since, including a "reboot -- -r", but I'm not certain the boot archive has been properly rebuilt, so I'm looking into that now.
Ta, Mark.

Hi Mark,
"reboot -r" doesn't rebuild the archive AFAIK, but maybe that has changed....
You may need to go into a failsafe now ;(
In installing the drivers you're also installing new text-mode drivers, do maybe it might change... ;)

Hi,
**** - that was it! My drm and radeon drivers are now installed, and I've got compiz and emerald running on my 3400, just like on my Ultra20. =O)
Thanks to everyone, and if anything needs to be changed, then maybe a comment should be added to the driver loaders explaining that "bootadm update_archive" needs to be run afterwards - or even run it in the script, as frkit does? I don't tend to use init 6 to reboot, and I'm sure many others don't either (I'm a big fan of poweroff or "uadmin 2 0" - they're so much faster, and fine in most all circumstances).
Ta, Mark.

Hi,
Thanks for the great work.
Installed Nevada B82 on my Ferrari 4005 this morning, little problem with localhost not being put into /etc/hosts which stopped gdm coming up.
Installed the DRI drivers, took glxgears from 400 frames per second to 2300.
Compiz installed fine using your instructions.
Has anyone else reported strange white borders on gnome control panel ?
Thanks
Dave

Hi All,
I've updated my compiz easy install bundle and my configuration
check script to support
the ATI radeon driver developed by Minskey.
So far it's only been tested on Ferrari 4000 laptop.
Details can be found here :

Cheers,
Erwann

Hi David,
That "white" border seems to be the "shadow" :)
Seems to be some issue with the default values on the ATI card, I've managed to get a more pleasing effect by running ccsm and editing the "Window Decoration" options to be :
Shadow Radius: 18 Shadow Opacity: 0.8 Shadow Color: #00000 (Black) Shadow OffsetX: 16 Shadow OffsetY: 0
I can't remember what the default values were, maybe you could post them here...
HTH,
Darren.
