New Community Proposal: Naming Services

The Network Repository team would like to propose a "Naming Services" community dealing with our codebase. We are primarily responsible for developing and maintaining naming and directory services and fit under the umbrella of approachability and interoperability. These include Native LDAP, Name Service Switch (NSS), Active Directory interoperability, user identity and authentication, NIS (YP), and legacy naming services such as NIS+.
The goal of this proposed community would be to engage users, sys admins, developers and others to contribute to developing interoperability solutions and improving the existing naming infrastructure in OpenSolaris.
The leaders of this community will participate and observe the approachability, security, sysadmin and networking communities as well. We will also cross post any discussion pertinent to any of the above communities.

I agree. There are a lot of ongoing issues that need to be discussed and would benefit from having this community.
Topics I can think of include functionality improvements in LDAP, that would lead to it's wider acceptance, migration strategies to move off NIS+ or NIS, and the improvements that are needed to aid in migration from these legacy naming services.
I think this community would also be a great place to discuss the interoperability issues that result from integrating multi-platform naming environments (Active Directory, Solaris/Linux) and things that can be done to improve these efforts.
Finally I think a naming services community would be a good open forum to discuss the design of new interfaces that have been missing from the Solaris/Unix/Linux toolset for far too long. Interfaces such as putXbyY APIs.

+1 from an Approachability community leader, though I would suggest "Name Services" rather than "Naming", as "Name" seems to be the more common industry term.

Thanks, John. We have no problem with calling the community "Name" Services instead.

I'm complete agree. I think its time that such a community existed.
I'm planning to start writing a bunch of documentation on the topic of LDAP and Kerberos shortly. A community where people could be directed to and become more involved would be a great compliment.

Thanks, Ben.

That's what we are hoping for with the creation of this community. We can definitely put pointers to related documents off of the community pages, once approved and set up.

Hi Anup,
I think setting up this Naming Services Community is a really excellent idea. Naming Services is such a key and important core technology and with the ever increasing demand for interoperability this kind of community can only be a good thing for all of us.
I think the need for this community is already apparent! as Ben Rockwood already mentioned he was planning on writing documentation on LDAP and Kerberos. Well, we (Sun) have already done a little work in this area and I certainly do not want to see folk duplicate there efforts.
This Naming Services Community certainly has my backing and support.

I'd love to see this take place. I've been working on slowly migrating 2000+ servers to LDAP (where previously each system maintained its own /etc/passwd file), and having a few battle scars, would love to be able to interact w/ those that work on the LDAP client support to offer suggestions, experiences, etc, and such a place would seem to be a perfect place to have those conversations.
