Hi all,

By way of introduction, I am the Senior Manager of Sun Developer Network in China, and I run (most of) the developer outreach activities (along with several business units in Sun) in China. During FY08 (2007.07.01 -- 2008.06.31) there were a total number of 122 technology outreach events of different scale happened in China, covering a total number of 19600 attendees. That's to say, one event every 3 days, with an average number of 160 attendees.

This achievement was the combined effort of the Technology Outreach Group under Matt Thompson, the Sun China ERI University Program under Sin-Yaw Wang, and the GSS Open Community Team under James Bai. The Asian Globalization Center (AGC), the ISV-E team, and the Solaris Engineering team at Sun China ERI also contributed significantly to this milestone.

If any of you are coming to China, and would like to join our community building efforts in China, please kindly let me know, and I will be more than glad to work with you. If you have any suggestions for our community building efforts in China, please also kindly let me know.

Below is a list of the events happened in FY08.

Wow. Excellent.

I've participated in a few of these events below. They are huge fun. And
the excitement coming out of China these days is very cool. The energy
is palpable, actually. And I also have to say that I'm impressed with
how you guys manage all these events. The logistics must be frightening.

And you are also quite a star too: :)

I'll be back this fall for sure. Would love to connect again. I'm
talking to the Linux community in Beijing about a possible visit, so
when I finalize a week I'll let you know. I'm especially interested in
going to more universities. And I'd like to also get a sense of what's
going on outside of Beijing and Shanghai. I understand that several
other areas are expanding rapidly as well, such as Dalian, which I
understand has a big Japanese-speaking community and a lot of Japanese
companies. If I can make some China-Japan connections, that would be
golden.

Hi Qingye,

I'll be in Beijing in August for vacations. I'd be interested if there
is anything planned then, though I understand there's another event
taking place during that period that might be the focus :-)

Hi Laurent,

As for the August trip, you know because of the Olympic Games, visa is
not easy to get at that time, it is supposed to be prepared in advance.
please have a look the process for applying China business visa at the
following:

https://eri.prc.sun.com/work/china_visa.jsp

1. Send the visitor the Notice and get his confirmation of compliance
2. His Business justification
3. His Manager & director approval ,
4. Inviting BU approval
5. ERI Legal approval , Cindy Fu
6. HR approval, Yasmin Leung

Then process the Invitation letter from FESCO.

The China University Program team will also try to find out if our
events can fit into your time slot. Will definitely keep you informed.

Best Regards,
Fiona.

Thanks for the advice, Fiona!
I think I'm all set for the visa application, as a tourist for this
time, it should be easier. I'm staying for the whole month, so hopefully
will get a chance to see how OpenSolaris events are going there :-)

Hi Qingye,

Thanks for the excellent report. I had one of my friends attended the session at the National Taiwan University on my behalf. It, however, was quite disappointing. There were almost more organizers/instructors than attendees. OTOH, at least the session in Dalian was very successful. I was told there were more than several hundred in the attendance. I was wondering what could be the cause of the difference?

But, overall, thanks for your great efforts!

Hi Wayne,

Good question.

Building communities, in essential, is building relationships. And we
all know, just like finding a boyfriend/girlfriend, relationship
building is a progressive process, which takes time and patients, and
requires a lot of communication. In mainland China, our team has been
actively involved in this process for 4 years, therefore we have a
relatively mature relationship with teachers, students, professional
developers in many regions across China. On the contrast, the trip to
Taiwan in April 2008 was the first time for us (our team in China).
Therefore, the low attendance and involvement was well expected before
the trip. However, the first step, however small it is, is required for
the second step.

Best regards,
