Hi all,
The Colorado project architecture will be reviewed at an open CLARC meeting on Thursday September 18th, at 9:00am US/Pacific time, it is planned to last at most 2 hours. Please see http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/colorado/ for project details.
Details of how to call in can be found at http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/CLARC. There are local and toll-free numbers available in some other countries, please ask if you need additional information.
This meeting is open to anyone who is interested. If you have issues to raise or concerns about the project please send them to the project leaders and/or post them here, preferably in advance of the review.
CLARC has until recently been an internal review body within the Solaris Cluster organization. I am the CLARC chairman, and am working with CLARC and community members to help CLARC to evolve into an open review forum within the HA Cluster community. I would be most happy to receive suggestions and/or comments both before and after the meeting. I will be updating the genunix page mentioned above as the process develops.
Thanks
Steve

Thanks, Nick

Note that comments are welcome from anyone, not just CLARC members.
Thanks, Nick

Below are my review comments for the Project Colorado requirements documents.
Requirements Specification: Colorado (Hisgen, Frueauf, Solter) Rev. 2.4 of 3 June 2008 -------------------------------------------------------------- MR-1. Several requirements starting with R16 mention "the configuration tool"; however, this term has not previously been introduced or defined. Perhaps there should be an explicit requirement for the config tool, if it is a new component. Is it the BUI or GUI mentioned in R45? In R27.1 you mention "the cluster system management tools". Would this be the same thing as "the configuration tool", or something else?
MR-2. R18 says that users must run the configuration tool to un-configure the cluster or cluster node before "removing the packages". However, R24 states that optional functionality (presumably embodied in packages) can be removed "without requiring a complete reinstallation or reconfiguration", and R25-27 provide details about installing, enabling, disabling & removing optional functionality. Perhaps R18 does not refer to optional functionality -- that should be clarified.
MR-3. R33 needs to clarify what is meant by "all ksh scripts". I.e., are we talking about all ksh scripts in existence? Or more likely, all ksh scripts that are delivered as part of Colorado itself.
Requirements Specification: Colorado Phase I: Infrastructure (Roush) Rev. 5 of 25 August 2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MR-4. The sentence at the end of section 4.1 begins with "This information is only recorded....". Please clarify the meaning of "This information" and "this issue".
MR-5. In section 4.4, clarify whether you are allowed to configure weak membership with no connectivity checks.
MR-6. R19 says that the ccradm option to discard CCR data file changes that were made during a split brain condition has to be run in non-cluster mode. It would be useful to allow this command to run in cluster mode (under weak membership) so that the "losing" node doesn't have to be rebooted twice.
Requirements Specification: Colorado1: Networking Requirements (Honsing) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No comments.
Requirements Specification: Solaris iSCSI Initiator and Target Support (Orbach, Franklin) Rev 1.4 of 04 September 2008 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- No comments.
Requirements Specification: GDD Colorado (Binu) Rev. 1.0 of 21 July 2008 ----------------------------------------------- MR-7. There are several Colorado requirements mentioned by R-number in section 1.2. I am not sure that the R-numbers match up properly with the latest draft of the Colorado Requirements Specification -- you should check this. This makes it difficult to understand the last paragraph before subsection 1.2.1. It might be better to reproduce those Colorado requirements here rather than just citing the R numbers.
MR-8. Regarding R4 and R5: Is it possible that a customer would want to use SVM volume management without using HA Cluster? In that case, the related commands and libraries, etc. would have to be available in an OpenSolaris package that could be installed independently. Does this conflict with R4 and R5?

Marty,
Sorry for the delay. Just in time for tomorrow's continuation of the review, here are my responses to your comments on the main Colorado document. I'll let the individual authors of the other documents respond to those points.
Martin Rattner wrote: > Below are my review comments for the Project Colorado requirements documents. > > Requirements Specification: Colorado (Hisgen, Frueauf, Solter) > Rev. 2.4 of 3 June 2008 > -------------------------------------------------------------- > MR-1. I re-wrote requirement 16 (and moved most of it to explanatory text, rather than the requirement itself) based on your comment and the discussion at the CLARC review. Here's what I have:
Because IPS packages don't support preinstall/postinstall/preremove/postremove scripts, the current package preinstall/postinstall/etc. logic must move elsewhere. Currently recognized options include new IPS actions, such as an SMF action, or execution by scinstall as part of the cluster configuration. The requirement here is simply:
R16:[Phase 1] The lack of scripting support in IPS packages shall be transparent to users. That is, users shall not need to run install/remove logic by hand. The cluster installation or configuration will take care of it.
In Requirements 17 and 18 I changed "configuration tool" to scinstall. That's really what we mean here. The system management tools mentioned in Requirement 27 are something new, but we haven't drilled down on that design yet, as it's for phase 3.

Right. I've tried to clarify:
R1:[Phase 1] Complete Cluster Uninstallation: Users must run scinstall to un-configure the cluster or cluster node before removing the packages from the cluster or cluster nodes. Note that optional functionality, described in section 2.2.4, can be removed without unconfiguring the cluster or cluster nodes.

The latter ;-) I've clarified.
Thanks, Nick

Hi all,
The Open CLARC review for the Colorado project will continue this Thursday (October 2nd). The remaining requirements documents that were not covered in the first review will be addressed.
I will be travelling and may not be able to host the call, so Ashu Tripathi has agreed to open the call and chair the review. Conference call details are the same as for the initial review. See http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/CLARC
This meeting is open to anyone, and all comments are appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

I've uploaded a revised version of the general requirements document, with changes shown (although I forgot to turn on change tracking until I'd made the changes for the first few of Marty's comments).
