[desktop-discuss] HELP: test Firefox 3.1b3 on OpenSolaris

Hi guys,
As you might know, we're coming close to the next OpenSolaris 2009.06 release. The original plan is to deliver Firefox 3.1 into this release, but the schedule from Mozilla community was delayed. So instead, we might deliver Firefox 3.1b3 which is about to release in the Mozilla community.
The QAs are testing Firefox 3.1b3 on OpenSolaris now. Here I'd also like to ask helps from the desktop community. If you're running OpenSolaris, please join us to test this version for Firefox. There is *NO* extra effort. Just be an end user and use it on your OpenSolaris boxes.
Please follow the instructions below to install Firefox 3.1b3: 1. Get the corresponding build from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/contrib/3.1b3-candidates/build1/ <http://. 2. Unpack the build. % bunzip firefox-3.1b3.en-US.opensolaris-i386-pkg.bz2. It'll give you three packages: SUNWfirefox SUNWfirefox-devel SUNWfirefox-bookmark 3a. For OpenSolaris users who are with the 2009.06 development build b118, you'll have to uninstall the following packages first and install the above three packages. It works ok for my own box. Please note this will probably break something. % pfexec pkg uninstall SUNWipkg-gui SUNWgnome-python-extras SUNWfirefox-bookmark SUNWfirefox % pfexec pkgadd -d . SUNWfirefox SUNWfirefox-devel SUNWfirefox-bookmark 3b. For OpenSolaris users who are with the original 2008.11 release: % pfexec pkg uninstall SUNWfirefox % pfexec pkgadd -d . SUNWfirefox SUNWfirefox-devel SUNWfirefox-bookmark 3c. For Solaris Nevada users, you'll have to pkgrm the packages and then pkgadd the new ones. The default start page is broken as it points to a local file exists only on OpenSolaris.
For flash plugins, the latest release 10.0.22.87 is recommended: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ <http://.
Please restart Firefox to make sure the 3.1b3 release is taken: "Help"->"About Mozilla Firefox".
Any problem or feedback for this build will be appreciated.
Thanks, -Alfred _______________________________________________ desktop-discuss mailing list desktop-discuss at opensolaris dot org

So please run the command below to install the packages after unpacking. % pfexec pkgadd -d firefox-3.1b3.en-US.opensolaris-i386-pkg

snv_103 sun4u sparc works fine - subjectively feels faster than 3.0.7 and printing works! No complaints here...
FWIW it complains that FireFTP 1.0.3 and Xesam search enginer[sic](beagle, tracker) 1.0.1 are not compatible with Firefox 3.1b3. Not sure I really care that much, but the apparently automatic installation of incompatible plugins is odd...
Off topic, but Thunderbird 3.0b1 is so much better than its predecessors, rock solid and much, much faster! And Gnome hasn't crashed in a month :-)
Happy users here!

Is FireFTP add-on part of your existing profile? I don't expect Firefox 3.1b3 to install add-ons automatically for a new profile. > Off topic, but Thunderbird 3.0b1 is so much better than its predecessors, > rock solid and much, much faster! Hi Alfred,
Thanks for the info. I will try to give it a spin today. (BTW, b118 should be b108, but I think it is quite obvious.)
Since you are with the desktop development team, I was wondering whether we have any liaison who works with OpenSolaris.org? I installed the OOo 3.1-beta2, but could start it. The error message:

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for testing the Firefox packages.

There is a happy ending. I copied this post to a wrong forum but this problem ended up being answered.

FF 3.1b3 seems to be working OK. However, when viewing some Chinese web pages, it causes the entire system to be dragged down almost to a crawl--with or without flash player. Please try this page:
http://www.nownews.com/
Closing down the offending pages, and the system immediately recovers.

If you get a chance, please also test one of Sun's own blog pages:
http://blogs.sun.com/yongsun/
try to vertically scroll the page. This is not as bad as the previous page, but still pretty sluggish on my system (a fairly decent core 2 duo machine with 4 GB DDR2 RAM).

Hello,
I'm running OpenSolaris 2008.11.
Additional dependencies are mentioned when trying to remove SUNWfirefox:
herrib@opensolaris:~/Téléchargement$ pfexec pkg uninstall SUNWfirefox Creating Plan /pkg: Cannot remove 'pkg:/SUNWfirefox@0.5.11,5.11-0.101:20081119T220640Z' due to the following packages that depend on it: pkg:/SUNWsongbird@0.5.11,5.11-0.101:20081119T230029Z pkg:/SUNWgnome-help-viewer@0.5.11,5.11-0.101:20081119T221715Z

The work around (for testing purpose) I can think of now is to uninstall all the dependencies first and reinstall Firefox from the packages. An alternative for Songbird binary is the contributed build from: http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Developer/Articles/Builds/Contributed_Builds. Maybe it's safer to do all these testing in a separate BE btw.

After further investigation, the slowness problem seems to occur with web pages having lots of graphics, see, e.g.:

These problems seem to have been moved with the installation of X.org 1.5.3 a la build 109 (or 107).

I am having problem playing archived TV shows from hulu.com . The video screen would freeze after a few minutes of playing (while the audio still continues to play). Then it will resume, but sometimes it will not.
I believe this problem is related to the flash player (I am running the newest version 10). But could the QA team take a look at this problem? Thanks.

Hasn't met the problem that video freezes and audio continues after playing for more than 20 minutes. Is there a specific video which causes the problem?
CC the flash developers Ginn/Leon as well.

The problem seems to have gone away after I rebooted my system (os0906_108 on HP 6728 laptop). I will let this machine run a while and do the testing again. (Btw, Build 108 is a little bit spooky, I am looking forward to updating to 109.)
Additional data: Before I submitted my report, I also did the same test, side-by-side, on my WinXP guest installed in VirtualBox 2.1.4 on the same machine, and I did not have any problem whatsoever with the WinXP guest. Thus, I don't think this was related to network transmission issue but seems to confirm that the problem was with running FF 3.1b3 on os0906_108.

I've just installed firefox 3.1b3 on opensolaris, and I noticed 2 things: 1) after bunzipping the package data stream, you don't have the 3 package files ready to install, you have to transform the stream to actual packages with this command: pkgtrans firefox-3.1b3.en-US.opensolaris-i386-pkg ./ SUNWfirefox SUNWfirefox-devel SUNWfirefox-bookmark 2) firefox upon startup told me that the "Xesam" search extension was disabled because there was no compatible version of it for firefox 3.1b3 3) first test I've redone was to go on images.google.com, search a random keyword, right click on an image, open in new tab: bingo! now it works! So I suppose this wasn't a firefox 3.1b2 problem, it was that **** Xesam search extension that I could not remove or uninstall, thank god it's now disabled >:P

You don't. You just pkgadd -d firefox-3.1b3.en-US.opensolaris-i386-pkg .

Are there any build instructions for firefox-3.1b3 on Sparc/Nevada? I'm using the compile flags and configuration options in the binary about:buildconfig, but I still get compile errors.

I am trying to install FF 3.1b3 in os0906_109. When doing a pkg uninstall SUNWfirefox, I was prompted to uninstall SUNWpython-extra, then SUNWipkg-gui, both of which I complied.
Then in doing pkgadd -d firefox-3.1b3.en-US.opensolaris-i386-pkg , I received the following warnings:
## Verifying package dependencies. WARNING: The <SUNWjdsrm> package "Java Desktop System upgrade package remove" is a prerequisite package and should be installed. WARNING: The <SUNWj5rt> package "JDK 5.0 Runtime Env. (1.5.0_17)" is a prerequisite package and should be installed. WARNING: The <SUNWdtbas> package "CDE application basic runtime environment" is a prerequisite package and should be installed.
Since I expect to update to build 110 soon, I simply ignored these warnings and went ahead with the installation.

The installation seems to have gone OK; I am posting this message from FF3.1b3.
Image-Updating to build 109 overwrote the previous FF3.1b3, necessitating this re-installation.

Hi Wayne,
The WARNING messages can be ignored. They are introduced by the fact that the Firefox 3.1b3 SVr4 package was made on Solaris Nevada machine with the spec files. The package dependency will be updated when importing to the IPS server as I understand.
Thanks, -Alfred
