FAQ: Website
What's the purpose of this site?
opensolaris.org is the online home for people interested in collaborating on the future development of the OpenSolaris code base. The OpenSolaris community will consist of both professional developers and end-users, from inside and outside of Sun. You can participate in a number of ways, including submitting bug reports, writing documentation and developing code.
Do I have to register on the site to a post message?
Yes. You can browse the discussion forums as a guest, but in order to post to the discussions you will need to create a user account and have your email address verified.
How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to a forum?
Once you have created an account, you can browse the forums and click 'watch forum' for any topics that you wish to follow. The system will then send all posts within your selection to the email address that you used upon registering. To stop receiving emails on a topic, click 'Stop watching forum'.
If you wish to change the address to which your mail is sent, click on your Username in the upper right hand corner of the screen to be taken to your profile page. (Also see, "How do I edit/remove my profile information?" below)
How do I report abuse?
To report a message that violates the Terms of Use, such as spam, send a mail with a link to the message to [help AT opensolaris DOT org].
If you believe that your account may have been compromised, please send mail with your account user name to [help AT opensolaris DOT org].
A member of our team will respond to your report as soon as possible.
Is cross-posting allowed?
No. Cross-posting between the mailing lists should be avoided.
Are job postings OK?
No.
Can I remove a message?
No. All messages sent to opensolaris.org mailing lists are archived. Do not send any information to the forum that you do want made publicly available. Our site policy is to never edit the archives except in cases of SPAM, viruses, or the posting of proprietary code.
In addition, if you choose to include your email address as part of your signature file, it will be included in the archives, and we will make no effort to remove it from the system.
Can I post announcements?
Perhaps. The site features an announcements page for the all of OpenSolaris, as well as one for each community. If you have an announcement that would be of interest to the entire OpenSolaris community, please send it to Derek Cicero (derek DOT cicero AT sun DOT com) or Jim Grisanzio (jim DOT grisanzio AT sun DOT com). To post an announcement within a community, please contact the appropriate community leader. The site or community leader will notify you if the announcement is approved.
Will my personal contact information be made public on the site?
It's up to you. When you create a user account, you will be asked to choose a Username and a "Real Name". The information from these fields will be shown throughout the system, including on your personal page, to identify you. If you do not wish to have your actual name shown, you can use a handle, such as "SolarisLover57", as your "Real Name". All postings to the forums will use your Username, so your email address will never be posted by the system, which allows you to remain anonymous if you wish (and avoids spam harvesters).
You also have the option of posting your personal information, such as email address, on your personal page.
How do I edit/remove my profile information?
If you wish to modify your profile information, click on your Username & Real Name, which are hyper-linked in the upper right hand corner of each page. Once you are on your profile page, you can make any changes to any field you wish with the exception of the Username field.
If you would like to delete your account, please contact Help (help AT opensolaris DOT org).
