Subject: Flag Day: Sun4v console changes incompatible with some firmware
This is an updated heads up message since it was pointed out that 6.2.0
firmware has been released.
This is a flag day message for all sun4v (Ontario and Erie) system
maintainers. The putback of:
6405226 qcn driver should use the CONS_READ and CONS_WRITE hypervisor APIs
causes sun4v machines with firmware releases 6.2.0_build_06 thru nightly
of May 27th to not boot. If your machine has one of those releases, the
firmware must be replaced with the 6.2.0 release of system firmware or
back to build 5. The status of build 6 is in question. The problem is
that the firmware reports a core API version of 1.1 even though the 1.1
feature - console read/write - is not present.
Checking for firmware build info:
Get to ALOM (#. on console)
s4vos9> showhost
System Firmware 6.2.0 Sun Fire[TM] T2000 2006/06/02 21:47
Host flash versions:
Sequencer 1.2.0
Hypervisor 1.2.0 2006/06/02 21:37 [greatlakes:ontario:release]
OBP 4.23.0 2006/06/02 16:14
Sun Fire[TM] T2000 POST 4.23.0 2006/06/02 16:44
s4vos9>
s4vos9> console
If the hypervisor date is between April 24th and May 27th the firmware
needs to be upgraded. To upgrade the firmware, shutdown the guest and
get back to alom (#.). poweroff -y and wait for power down to complete.
upgrade the firmware (ontario):
flashupdate -s <ftp server ip> -f \
/ws/sysfw6.2-gate/Delivery/6.2.0/ontario/Sun_System_Firmware-6_2_0-Sun_Fire_T2000.bin
or for erie:
flashupdate -s <ftp server ip> -f \
/ws/sysfw6.2-gate/Delivery/6.2.0/erie/Sun_System_Firmware-6_2_0-Sun_Fire_T1000.bin
Sorry for the trouble, but I think you'll find the console thruput worth
it...
