Subject: Heads-up: PSARC/2005/133 Name Service Switch 2 Announcement

This heads up is to announce the delivery of the
Name Service Switch 2 project [PSARC/2005/133] (code named sparks)
with the putback of CR 6225323.

Further details are located on:
         http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/sparks/
         http://panjim.sfbay/wiki/index.php/Sparks:_nscd/nss_enhancements

Sparks introduces changes to the name service switch infrastructure,
and the underlying library APIs. When nscd is enabled, the libraries
now redirect all nsswitch requests to nscd for processing, versus the
limited subset of nsswitch requests previously sent to nscd.

With this putback there should be no bfu, install, upgrade,
or configuration issues.

Normally nscd is enabled, so the improvements from this putback include:
         all NSS DBs cached
improved management of cached data in nscd
         managed & multiplexed LDAP connections
improved getXbyY buffering: IE getXbyY_r's support >8k buffers
use of DNS ttls for host DNS lookups

and with additional configuration a new per-user GSS/Kerberos credentialed
lookup capability as part of LDAP naming services.

At this time nscd remains an optional component, and if disabled
the system should be backwards compatible with previous Solaris builds.

The following bug categories/sub-categories should be used in
logging name service switch or nscd bugs:
         solaris/ldap/switch
         solaris/library/libnsl
         solaris/network/nscd
         solaris/network/nsswitch

If you have any questions/comments/concerns, please send email
to sparks at sun dot com.
