Heads Up: Zones upgrade in Nevada build 53Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2006 16:25:09 -0800 From: Ethan Quach <ethan.quach at sun dot com> To: onnv-gate at onnv dot sfbay dot sun dot com Subject: Heads Up: Zones upgrade in Nevada build 53 If you use Zones, please read on. The putback to the Install consolidation of Zulu, PSARC/2006/167, introduces to the Nevada train support for upgrading a system containing installed non-global zones. (Note: This putback does not introduce support for upgrading zones on ZFS filesystems. The ZFS Boot Support project will add ZFS support for install and upgrade.) Beginning with build 53 of Nevada, you can upgrade a system containing installed non-global zones using any of the standard interactive upgrade (both GUI and text interfaces), Live Upgrade, or Jumpstart automated upgrade paths. We recommend that upgrades of systems with non-global zones use Live Upgrade, as the time required to complete the upgrade increases linearly with the number of installed non-global zones. If you do not intend to use Live Upgrade, you need not read further. Use of Live Upgrade with installed non-global zones is supported beginning with boot environments installed with snv_52; however, the non-global zones must not be installed on filesystems which are shared between boot environments. The fix for CR 6479675, which appears in snv_53, will remove this restriction. To perform a Live Upgrade with installed non-global zones from snv_52, you must first execute: # /ws/install-nv-gate/tools/bin/update_zulu_snv52 which will upgrade your SUNWadmc and SUNWpkgcmdsu packages. To use Live Upgrade from a Solaris 10 boot environment, that boot environment must currently be running Solaris 10 Update 3; the current restriction is due to patch dependencies that are not yet sorted out and will revert to the usual restriction of applying the required patches from Infodoc 72099 when the backport of Zulu to Solaris 10 is completed. In order to use Live Upgrade from a Solaris 10 Update 3 environment with non-global zones installed, you must first execute: # /ws/install-nv-gate/tools/bin/update_zulu_s10u3 which will upgrade your SUNWzoneu package. As always when using Live Upgrade, you must first upgrade the Live Upgrade packages to the release you are upgrading to, with a sequence such as: # pkgrm SUNWluu SUNWlur SUNWlucfg # pkgadd -d <path to install image being upgraded to>/Solaris_11/Product \ SUNWlucfg SUNWlur SUNWluu Bugs can be filed in the appropriate sub-categories under product solaris, category solaris_install.
