This month, we're doing a talk aimed at new users of OpenSolaris who've had previous experience with GNU/Linux and other UNIX-like operating systems. There's a few things that are different about day-to-day administration of an OpenSolaris box if you're used to GNU/Linux, eg. SMF vs. init.d, ptools vs. /proc, /etc/vfstab vs. /etc/fstab, truss & dtrace vs. sotruss, RBAC vs. sudo – the list goes on. The Unix Rosetta certainly can help new users, but seeing the differences in person and seeing them demoed does make a difference. There's a great deal to cover in a topic like this, but Eoin Hughes and Alberto Ruiz are an intrepid pair, and they're going to be talking about some of the more obvious things that someone new to OpenSolaris will encounter first. As always, we're open to ideas for talks – if you'd be interested in hearing more about OpenSolaris, then we're the people to talk to. Oh, and we'll be going for pints somewhere afterwards, all welcome! |
