SSGD based developer platform in the works ? | 03/17/2008

Rumor has it that the guys at blastwave have a SSGD based platform developers will be able to use in the works. Happy days for porters I would say. Stay tuned for more News and Announcements from there..

New Openolaris Social Network Site in the works ? | 03/14/2008

Rumor has it that Dennis Clarke, the founder and admin at Blastwave.org is setting up a large Sun Secure Global Desktop based social network service for OpenSolaris community people to use. There are test people lining up for this so if you want to be a test phase person then drop Dennis Clarke a line at dclarke at blastwave dot org and he will get you a zone and a desktop and all the tools you could ask for.

We posted the rules to become a contributor/core contributor to our community. Most of it was shamelessly copied by me from the testers community who have done an extremely good job at their guidelines. Thanks for the great input guys.

Yes, my original sentence is probably less clear :)

Scope The proposed Software Porters Community Group shall be the group that coordinates, advocates, encourages and helps with the porting of Software from multiple Platforms to the OpenSolaris Platform. This is neither a proposal for a new packaging system, nor for a new collection of software (therefore it neither is something like blastwave, nor in its core the same like the migration community suggestion which both want to work on specific ways of porting/packaging). Its a proposal to create a community of porters, advocates and advisors that will help people who want to port software, advise them, create documentation and maintain links and resources about the many different places you can find information and ported software. This will be handled in a way that shall be independent of religion and politics regarding amongst others the way packages are done o if sunstudio or gcc are the better way to do things.

Once ported, then, where would this software be available from? Perhaps this CG should seek to work with other CGs to provide a package repository for the ported software to be distributed from?

That depends. The initial idea is to get more people to do porting, and make porting easier. If it comes to distribution, yes we where thinking of a cg repo, as well as getting some people to sponsor cpu cycles for testing and packaging for example. On the other hand if a porter is part of SFE, blastwave, sunfreeware.org he probably prefers his results there, which is fine with us. We want to help him get his port done and publish his experiences on our portal so that the next guy will have it easier if he chooses to take the same approach. We DONT want to tell people, hey this is the only right way. We rather want to say, ok you can use our ressources, but hey we will help and encourage you the same should you choose any of the non opensolaris.org core porting projects.

It would be more like the umbrella that keeps the info, ressources and knowhow pooled for all the porting efforts, and help others join. Its a bit like merging porters per se and porting advcacy int a central space while trying to keep everybody happy, which of course will be tricky but is the right way to go. THe ultimate would of course be to merge all the projects that create larger porting work into one, but I am not sure if that is necessary if we create a central space that links to all of them and is the platform of communication and knowhow ressources for all of them.

Proposal The core of this proposal is to:

Create a Software Porters Community Group Create a Software Porters Information Portal (the central place for everything porting to solaris) Start evangelizing porting to OpenSolaris at FOSS and non FOSS conferences and shows. That the following individuals be considered for the initial set of core contributors (all have been asked and confirmed their readynes to become core contributors):

Who is the proposed facilitator for the group? (i.e. the person who would communicate the status of the CG to the OGB, be responsible for submitting approved projects to the Project Herald, etc.).

me for the time being, until the core group would elect someone.

If you can clarify the purpose of this CG a bit further; I would be willing to vote in favour of it.

I ope I clarified it a bit. My reply took a bit longer cause I was at FOSDEM and only touched my notebook between 5-8 am for the last days :)

I just need to know if the purpose of this CG is to actually sponsor projects to do porting work, or if it merely seeks to coordinate the efforts of other CGs.

Its more a CG that would create a lot of projects. That is one of the reasons I saw it more as a community while also the coordinatin work, ie information exchange, discussion platform etc would interact for sure with any ther community that involve itself into porting so it would hardly fit one single community as a project.

If the latter; then this CG might be better done as a project of an existing CG instead of as its own CG.

I am uncertain at the moment.
