OpenSolaris Project: Link Layer DiscoveryView the leaders for this projectProject Observers Project OverviewSeveral brands of managed switches support the use of various link layer discovery protocols. This allows one end of a link to gather information about the other end of the link without the need of any prior configuration or setup. Such protocols help simplify the task of discovering network topology as well as be a valuable diagnostic aid. The aim of this project is to add support to OpenSolaris for these protocols. Initally, only LLDP (aka IEEE 802.1AB) will be supported; other protocols (such as CDP or EDP) will be examined at a later date. The desired end result will allow a system to display any known information about the peer at the other end of a link, as well as optionally send information out about itself. It will also investigate how this information can be used by other components that might find it useful (such as Network Automatic (NWAM)).
