Welcome to the OpenSolaris Starter Kit project!

NOTE: We have temporarily discontinued orders of the kit while we redesign the content. Thanks for your interest, help out by sending your comments and suggestions to the mailing list.

Get the Starter Kit iso image here. View the backup, partitioning, and installation videos here. Alternatively, subscribe to the Starter Kit mailing list and help out!

Below are screenshots of the Introduction and Installation tabs of the i learn DVD that comes with the kit. Free Solaris 10 training is here. . screenshot

This project is for people working specifically on the documentation and media kit to introduce "newbies" to OpenSolaris.

Please note that this project is distinct from projects to do with making OpenSolaris itself more approachable: we're working on the Starter Kit, not on the code.

The project aims to help those new to OpenSolaris approach the project by helping with the following:

  • installation of OpenSolaris distributions (phase 1 – where we are today)
  • exploring OpenSolaris source code (phase 2)
  • building OpenSolaris (phase 3)
  • making changes to OpenSolaris source code (phase 3 too)
  • submitting bugs and code contributions to OpenSolaris (phase 4)

…and given that OpenSolaris is constantly evolving, so will the Starter Kit.

Anything you can offer in this direction is welcome – we need help creating the content for the additional phases. But it doesn't end there. We're also #looking for people to help with design, writing, translations, and other smart ideas for helping those new to OpenSolaris.

Here is the Requirements Document (PDF ) (OpenOffice)that includes all of the requirements we have gathered for all of the project phases. That's not to say that it includes everything…if you see something missing, feel free to add it.
